ABC's of Treating Anxiety

Relieve your stress and anxiety the natural way!

Ashwagandha

An herbal “phytomedicine”, Ashwagandha has been proven in small studies to be both safe and effective in treating anxiety. Traditionally an herb used in ayurvedic medicine, this herb has many health benefits, including reducing stress, anxiety, and blood sugar levels.

Ashwagandha belongs to a group of compounds called “adaptogens”. Adaptogens are non-toxic plants that work by helping the body’s natural defense systems to moderate stress and anxiety responses. Most medical experts would agree that these compounds are safe and do not pose any serious health risks.

While no herbal supplement is FDA approved, and cannot claim to cure any ailment, ashwagandha has a good safety profile, according to current research.

As with all herbal supplements, check to be sure you’re purchasing from a reputable source, and consult with your doctor or pharmacist before making any changes to your prescription drug therapy.

Deep Breathing

Deep breathing can stimulate the vagus nerve, slowing the heart rate and decreasing blood pressure. The vagus nerve helps to control the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for helping your body to “rest-and-digest”, and counteracts the effects of compounds released in the body during high stress situations that send the body into a more excited state.

Decrease your stress and anxiety by breathing in through your nose for 4 counts, holding your breath, then exhaling through your mouth for 8 counts. Repeat for at least three cycles. The best part? It’s completely safe, and you won’t have to worry about drug interactions!

CBD

Relatively new in popularity, CBD (cannabidiol) is a chemical extracted from varieties of hemp plants. Similar to the plants used to extract the more well-known THC, varieties used to produce CBD products are low in THC.  This means that a dose of CBD will decrease your anxiety without creating the “high” feeling associated with other cannabis products that are higher in THC. Currently, hemp-derived CBD is completely legal in 47 states (sorry Idaho, South Dakota, and Nebraska!)

While no herbal supplement can claim to cure any ailment, CBD oils are safe to use and have little to no harmful side effects when used responsibly.
Cannabidiol works on receptors naturally found in the human body, in the brain, peripheral nervous system, spleen, and tonsils.

By activating CB1 receptors found in the brain, CBD, when used regularly, can help the brain tone down the effects of chronic anxiety on the brain, leading to an overall reduction of anxiety-related symptoms.

As with all herbal supplements, check to be sure you’re purchasing from a reputable source, and consult with your doctor or pharmacist before making any changes to your prescription drug therapy.
